On the 28th of February, in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of STU in Bratislava, the first “Academia Meets Industry” seminar took place. This seminar is a part of the project FrontSeat.
“Academia Meets Industry” seminars are activities aimed to stimulate discussion between academia and industry managers and practitioners. We believe in the need for the industry to play an active role in this discussion to help to shape the academic research agenda that would reflect their pressing and emerging issues.

The meeting started with a short welcome word from the project coordinator Prof. Miroslav Fikar. After that, he announced the members of the newly formed “FrontSeat Industry Council for Cybernetics”. All the members received appointment decrees.

The first meeting was focused on getting to know each other and hearing the first ideas and thoughts on how this cooperation could work.

There were representatives from 8 companies: Photoneo, Schunk, Prosystemy, ATP Journal, SmartBase, IQLOGY, VÚEZ, ŽP Výskumno-vývojové centrum. Representatives from Garrett Motion Slovakia, SOVA Digital, and Slovnaft were not present but also were elected to the Council. Despite industry partners, there were also members of STU, who were elected to be members of the newly formed Council: Prof. Miroslav Fikar, Prof. František Duchoň, Prof. Danica Rosinová, and Associate Prof. Martin Gulan. After a short round table presentation Associate Prof. Radoslav Paulen presented a good practice example from his cooperation with the company Slovnaft.

The most important part of the meeting was the discussion. The industrial partners presented their approach to the cooperation and raised valuable questions. Practices and good and bad experiences were discussed. In the end, the Council agreed to prepare some more clear vision of needs from the part of the industry, so the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava could easier understand what kind of students, with what skills, they could suggest. Council agreed to meet at least 2-times per year in an informal setting, to stimulate more active discussion.
