On March 22, we organized a scientific seminar on “VESNA – Let Your Ideas Grow“. The seminar was led by Erika Pavlovičová, a PhD student at Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, Slovakia, and was organized in the framework of the FrontSeat project as part of the seminar series on “Research Seminar on Smart Cybernetics”.

Abstract:
In this talk, we dive into the multifaceted nature of VESNA, a comprehensive project that spans development, education, and research. What originally started as an idea for a semester project has soon turned into an innovative long-term project hosting novel educational concepts and recent research tasks. Since its introduction in 2021, a project, VESNA, has been dedicated to developing the smart eco-greenhouse. Therefore, within three years, VESNA became one of the cornerstones in laboratory-oriented courses for students, including bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the Department of Information Engineering and Process Control, STU. VESNA integrates the theoretical foundations of process control, information technologies, and artificial intelligence. Simultaneously, VESNA improves the student’s skills in designing embedded hardware and software development. VESNA also become one of the flagship devices garnering high visitor attention at various events dedicated to science popularization and country-wide media communication. In this presentation, we highlight the significant milestones achieved by the project thus far, showcasing its impact on student education and its role in promoting our academic programs. Additionally, we explore current challenges of research in process control, including Model Predictive Control (MPC) and distributed MPC, utilizing VESNA as a platform for experimentation and innovation.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon under grant no. 101079342 (Fostering Opportunities Towards Slovak Excellence in Advanced Control for Smart Industries).
