From February 26 to 28, 2025, Prof. Martin Mönnigmann visited the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (STUBA) as part of the Horizon Europe project FrontSeat. During his visit, Prof. Mönnigmann engaged in several productive discussions with project consortium members, researchers, and PhD students at STUBA, strengthening cooperation and driving forward key research initiatives. His engagement contributed to the exchange of ideas and the advancement of ongoing projects within the FrontSeat framework.

Prof. Martin Mönnigmann’s visit, hosted by Prof. Miroslav Fikar (STUBA), the project coordinator, facilitated productive discussions to advance joint research efforts and coordinate upcoming project activities.

Project Meeting: Updates and Coordination of Future Project Activities

Prof. Miroslav Fikar and Prof. Martin Mönnigmann engaged in a productive project meeting, where they reviewed the latest achievements of the FrontSeat project and discussed strategies for the next phases of the project. Their discussions contributed to a well-structured plan for upcoming research activities, reinforcing cooperation within the consortium and ensuring continued progress toward the project’s objectives.

Advancing Joint Research on MPC Design

Prof. Martin Mönnigmann engaged in an in-depth discussion with Prof. Miroslav Fikar and his research group, focusing on the progress of their joint research initiatives. The meeting provided a valuable platform to review recent advancements, exchange insights, and refine research strategies. Their discussions further strengthened the longstanding research collaboration between STUBA and Ruhr University Bochum (RUB), underscoring the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation in addressing complex scientific and engineering challenges. In addition to discussing current developments, they explored new opportunities for cooperation, including potential joint publications, research funding proposals, and expanded academic partnerships.

Prof. Martin Mönnigmann met also with Assoc. Prof. Juraj Oravec (STUBA), Dr. Juraj Holaza (STUBA), and PhD student Nora Lindner (RUB) to review the progress of their joint research on complexity reduction in Model Predictive Control design. The discussion focused on current findings, open problems, and potential directions for future work.

In addition, Prof. Martin Mönnigmann held discussions with Assoc. Prof. Martin Gulan (STUBA) regarding their joint research project. Their conversation explored ongoing developments and future opportunities for research cooperation.

Planning for the 25th International Conference on Process Control

Prof. Martin Mönnigmann met with Assoc. Prof. Radoslav Paulen to discuss the organization of an Invited Session at the upcoming 25th International Conference on Process Control. The conference, which will take place in the High Tatras in Slovakia from June 3-6, 2025, will serve as a key platform for presenting advancements in process control and fostering international cooperation.

Coordination of the Upcoming Summer School

In cooperation with Assoc. Prof. Juraj Oravec and Dr. Peter Bakaráč discussed the organization of the upcoming Summer School, scheduled for September 1-5, 2025, at Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) in Germany. The Summer School aims to provide an engaging learning experience for students and researchers in the field of process control and optimization.

Engagement with PhD Students

PhD students Erika Pavlovičová, Diana Dzurková, and Rastislav Fáber had the opportunity to present their current research progress to Prof. Martin Mönnigmann. Beyond the academic discussions, Prof. Miroslav Fikar warmly welcomed Prof. Martin Mönnigmann to experience Bratislava’s rich culinary traditions. They enjoyed a social dinner, creating an inviting atmosphere for informal exchanges and strengthening professional ties in a more relaxed setting. This gathering provided a valuable opportunity to foster cooperation on a personal level, further enhancing the spirit of teamwork and mutual understanding within the FrontSeat project.
