David Müller, a Ph.D. student at the Chair of Automatic Control and Systems Theory at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB), spent a month collaborating with researchers at the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava (STUBA) as part of his research. The research exchange took place as part of the Horizon Europe Project FrontSeat and was hosted by the Institute of Robotics and Cybernetics.

Almost one year ago, Marek Cornak, a Ph.D. student at the Institute of Robotics and Cybernetics at STUBA, visited the Chair of Automatic Control and Systems Theory to bring his expertise about gesture-based control of robots to RUB. He paired up with David Müller to extend the use of his gesture-based control from ground robots to UAVs. Driven by the idea of making gesture control accessible to a broader audience, the two began to develop a dedicated framework. Unfortunately, Marek Cornak’s research exchange ended too soon, and completion of the framework was not yet in sight.

David Müller’s exchange provided an ideal opportunity to advance work on the framework. Despite the challenging environmental conditions in Bratislava with temperatures above 35 degrees, the two Ph.D. students expanded their framework to once again increase the level of modularity. After hours of bug fixing, it was finally time to move on to the testing phase in the institute’s flight laboratory. But again, the month went by faster than expected, and the last flight tests could not be conducted. David Müller and Marek Cornak scheduled a monthly meeting to finalize the framework and turn their work into a joint conference publication.

Beyond research, there was plenty to discover and experience. How about a bike tour to Hungary or a visit to the castle? The excellent weather made several trips possible, which were often rewarded with delicious Slovakian cuisine.

Thanks to our colleagues at STU Bratislava for their hospitality and for giving us the opportunity to participate in such an enriching scientific exchange.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon under grant no. 101079342 (Fostering Opportunities Towards Slovak Excellence in Advanced Control for Smart Industries).
